Mask Project (2008)

performance tool research at Steim

This project was done during one-month residency at Steim.  Its goal was to make a working prototype of a mask that is to be used as a performance tool.  Through the mask, the voice of the users change according to their heart rate.  Two masks were constructed using Velleman voice changer kit, Arduino board and optical heart rate sensor.  In addition, MAX/MSP was used for data analysis.  The first try out was mainly to test whether the voice change is responsive to heart rate:  the higher the heart rate, the higher the voice gets.  It is to be further developed. watch
